Crashing of society a popular subject over the past 24 hours

Apocalyptic, end-of-society hypothesis are nothing new. What is strangely coincidental is the appearance of at least 4 web discussions today with an eerie similarity, addressing the subject of why people dwell on the subject.

Most popular so far was the frenzied discussion on Reddit, initiated with the question “Why do I fantasize about madmaxliving in a post-apocalyptic world?” Among the over 300 comments so far are psychological diagnosis of the obsession, and less cerebral but no less interesting answers such as: “..because it would be AWESOME!!”

About an hour later, the post Why do some of us wish for SHTF? showed up on WhenSHTF blog. The more pithy comments here offered the idea of mother nature hitting the reset button, and “Maybe the reason why we wish for SHTF is just because we know that the world is falling down into decadence. We don’t necessarily wish for it, but know there is a need to prepare for these inevitable acts of divine intervention.”

About 6 hours after that, a frequent visitor to The Survival Podcast blog asks the question, “Are you looking forward to, or dreading, the shit hitting the fan?”

  • “I’ve never really admitted this, except to my spouse, but I would welcome a SHTF scenario.”
  • “I often fantasize about a SHTF scenario, and even tend to romanticize it. I’ve mentioned it to my wife that I would welcome the change.”

It is interesting that this very similar hypothetical was asked at the same time in these distinct locations. There is even another similar theme on Jim Kunstlers Cluster Fuck Nation blog. His weekly post released an hour after all of this compares overpopulating humans as Yeast People, asking what we will do when ” hardships mount and hardened emotions rise, we’ll see “the usual suspects” come into play: starvation, disease, violence.”

It was quite a collection of dark scenarios this morning. Most curious was how so many people were “coming out of the closet” looking for others who not only were expecting doom, but even embracing the catastrophe.
