Out of bullets?

How bad are government budgets when police departments are running short of bullets? The Gainesville GA police department waited months for its most recent supply of ammunition, according to a recent article in the local bulletnewspaper. According to Col. Jeff Strickland, the agency did experience delays of several months in getting bullets. Budget tightening, not a shortage of bullets, has reduced firearms qualifying from four times annually to twice a year at the sheriff’s office.

Forced into a corner by a $190 million budget deficit, Dallas TX may be about to take a bite out of crime- fighting funds. The Dallas Police Department’s civilian workforce could be reduced by as many as 190 of the department’s 739 civilian employees, officers could be pulled off the streets to perform jobs previously done by the civilians.

San Francisco’s budget is resulting in a reduced public safety program. Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said cuts could result in the loss of 173 firefighters, and the closure of 12 out of 42 fire stations, resulting reductions in response times to fires and medical emergencies.
