What do all of these stories mean to you?

Yesterday I described how to protect your assets in one article, and analyzed possible worst-case scenarios in another.

Look at 3 news stories today, and judge for yourself if they tell you that it is more likely that we are moving in that direction, or less likely:

1. Florida gun dealers are running out of bullets. Cases of ammunition are selling out at sky high prices, as citizens gunpictureanticipate the need for weapons capability and fear that legislation proposed by Barack Obama will prohibit purchases and even ownership of guns and ammunition.

A bill being drafted has the following provisions:

  • H.R. 45 would require a federal license for all handguns and semiautomatics, including those you currently possess; and
  • It would require handgun and semi-auto owners to be thumbprinted at the police station and to sign a certificate that, effectively, the firearm will not be kept in a place where it would be available for the defense of the gun owner’s family.
  • The FBI would soon be examining every confidential statement you have ever made to psychologist or psychiatrist.

  • Private sales of handguns and semi-autos would be outlawed, and reports to the attorney general of all transactions would be required.

2. Another bill proposed to turn more military bases into government shelters. The stated intention of these camps is to provide shelter for citizens in the event of a disaster. However, the size, number, and layout of the camps has resulted in some people calling into question the true reason for the camps, that they may be used for detainment.

3. Many large US cities are becoming more vacant as its residents flee from high cost-of-living and low quality-of-life. Mounting evidence is pointing towards the fact that this trend is creeping into the suburbs as well. There are reports of entire subdivisions virtually vacant, such as these examples in Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota.

As you consider what these stories might mean for the future, take into account that these are just one days worth of news. Often times the cumulative effect of information is lost over time as prior days and weeks news stories fade.
