Do you hate where you live?

If so, you fit in with almost half of Americans, as reported by Pew Research. Their survey reported that 46% would rather live somewhere other than where they live now.

The grass is greener……

Most of the respondents indicated a preference to an area more rural than where they currently lived, although some wanted to live in a bigger city.

It is logical to presume that the decline in home prices is a factor in this. More people than ever owe more on their home than it can be sold for, so relocating is difficult. Websites such as BestPlaces.com allow people to compare their current location to potential new cities, making it easier to consider places which might be better than where they are now.

Serial relocation is a relatively new trend in society. Until the 1970′s, most people stayed in the same general area where they were raised. Improved job mobility, ubiquitous and cheap air travel, and less cohesive family units made it easier to consider picking the best place to move to. From 2007 – 2008, just 12% of people moved, the smallest percentage since the figures have been tracked in the 1940′s.

Even with it being easier to move, 40% of people still never leave the place they were born.
